Hmm - I have an Altix 330 kicking about too, and I've tried that. It's going to require some help, I think. :-)

I went into EFI command mode, and then ran elilo. The kernel loaded from the CD fine, and began to run:

After which it went rather quiet. To me, this smells like it's working, just not talking to the console any more. It's running quite an old PROM, so I'm going to update that, and then try again.
