the build log of tex4ht contains many warnings that are indicative of
64-bit problems. for example:
t4ht.c: In function `main':
t4ht.c:1574: warning: implicit declaration of function `kpse_var_value'
t4ht.c:1574: warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size
t4ht.c:1613: warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size

these will likely cause segfaults.

somebody will need to review the code to make sure it is 64-bit clean.
