Thanks, you are quite right. I originally had home compiled
xserver, then installed the package Matthew Wilcox pointed
me to. This didn't appear to affect the nvidia driver so I neglected
to re-install it. The nvidia driver was running, just refusing
to do 3D acceleration. A re-install of the nvidia drivers solved
the problem.

I didn't go far however, when I tried to use the mouse to control,
I couldn't get the throttle to budge. (as determined by
engine RPM) It did work from the keyboard.
I have USB keyboard and mouse. (wheel mouse, wheel does
work in some apps)
