That's the xserver-xfree86 from unstable.  That server is indeed known to not
work right now.  The 4.1.0-16 server from stable/woody works ok, and some
people have been successful with the debug version of the server in the -dbg
package.

The root cause of the mess isn't entirely understood, but appears to be badness
between the xfree86 4.2 sources and gcc-3.X on ia64. 

The current plan is to make sure that the 4.3 server works when it hits
unstable, which is coming soon.  In the meantime, find a server package that
works for you (like the one in woody), and put the xserver-xfree86 package on 
hold until you see a 4.3 server package appear.
