fwiw with gcc version 3.1 20020331 (prerelease) the problem appears to
be fixed. I think this might be the same/related to pr/5363, but not
sure.
there are a couple of fixes that might be related to this in cvs....
unfortunately with the pending woody release we probably won't get this
in till woody+1...
