Your web broswer might be trying to "help" and gunzip'ing it for you. 
Netscape has been known to do that. Run `file`, it would say "data" if 
not-zip'd or "gzip compressed data" if zip'd. Looks like an md5sums file in 
that directory would help. To avoid the "smart" gunzip'ing try a different 
browser or something like wget.
