The other issue with GPT is disks with odd numbers of sectors.
parted has code to do a special ioctl to get at the last sector,
but that ioctl is not part of the standard kernel. So if you
have an odd number of sectors parted with throw up an error.
The ioctl is considered an ugly incorrect solution, and something
better should be available in 2.5 kernels. That said, I've three
different sizes of disk on my ia64 boxes, and they all have an even
number of sectors - I've no idea how common odd numbers of sectors
are.
