Sorry, my fault, I gave incomplete directions.
There is also needed to do the following (in tye.debian.org):
dir=/etc/ssl/ca-debian
test -d $dir && git config --local --add http.sslCAInfo $dir/ca-certificates.crt
(This is documented in https://wiki.debian.org/ServicesSSL#git )
