You probably meant 4 years ago. Ubuntu had its first release in October 2004 ;-) .

That sounds like a bug if indeed there's an error. You probably need to report that on
debian-boot@lists.debian.org in detail (you will make contact with the Boot team anyway, if you want
to translate).
