That's usually the only check I do.
It checks the validity of the PO format.

Other checks that come to my mind:

 pofilter (in the translate-toolkit package)
	Many checks. see "pofilter -l"
	Very verbose, but help to review PO files.

 gettext-lint (never used, not packaged in Debian)

 acheck
	Spell checker.
