My off-topic rample:

It is sometimes claimed that the 12 language with most speakers are,
in no particular order: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese,
Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Hindi, Bengali, Arabic. Half
of those are easy to support with iso-8859-1. Russian is
algorithmically no harder. For Chinese and Japanese you need
double-width characters, which is a little harder. The last three are
difficult to support with current software.
