X11 setup

Hi,

is there a current guide for a X11 setup? I have a HURD install now in a 
VM and most things work smoothly (except aptitude).
However I cannot start (using startx) "out of the box".
I remember that a couple of years ago, one had to startup console first 
with certain parameters.
How are things now?
