Hrm, my bad. I tried again (with ld.so this time), and the built
libc.so is indeed fine.

What makes trouble (and indeed aborts the build) is that static linking
is not working correctly it seems - the build aborts when trying to run
[libc]/elf/sln, just "Killed" is being printed. rpctrace reports this:

task165->vm_map (135139328 134209536 0 0 (null) 0 0 0 7 1) = 0x3
((os/kern) no space available)

We remember we had issues with static linking recently, should I
downgrade gcc-4.2 or does the culprit lie elsewhere?

Michael
