The root parameter is 0 based, so I assume you've installed it on

> kernel		/boot/gnumach.gz root=device:hd0s2 -s

If so, then the device here will need to be hd0s3.

Other than what I see, it looks good to me (I'm a Hurd newbie too). 
Did you use crosshurd to install it?
