I've applied the forgotten X forwarding patch to my Debian openssh CVS repository again. I'm looking at this libcrypt one now.

Barry: I'll probably just make the GNOME build-dependency [!hurd-i386]. It's not crucial to the core functionality of the package.

I am trying to build openssh-3.8.1p1.

I have gotten around the res_query, dn_expand, and crypt errors with the following patch.  However, I am now getting errors for undefined references to Xshm* in libgdk-imlib so it still needs work.

How is this going to get fixed when openssh has a build depends on libgnome-dev?
