dpkg gone bonkers?

Is anyone else having this problem?

When I try to do an 'apt-get -u upgrade' or if I try to 'apt-get -u
install' the packages of the upgrade independently I get an error from many
of them. The error is 'package architecture (hurd-i386) does not match
system (i686-gnu0.3)'. While the meaning of this message is clear the
reason for it is not. Why has my system recently stopped believing that it
is a HURD system?
