I filed bug number #164117 in response to Marcus reqesting someone look into it the problem of building the latest e2fsprogs. The bug has gotten a response from upstream, i would have liked to confirm what he says however my hurd machine has fails to boot since a recent (x weeks) hurd-*deb upgrade... im not sure when i will reinstall.
