I suggest you to read the log in /var/log/XFree86.0.log to see
why the X server fails to run.
I advise you to read Neal's installation guide too. Look at

Virtual consoles are implemented in the new Marcus' console system,

But marcus' console is new, and doesn't interact well with X at the moment.
