You can get the files via Linux or any other operating system, you just
won't have net access directly from the hurd.
Let me tell you that I have bootstrapped the whole system with only a modem,
so it is pretty much doable. You just have to want it very much :)
I still have only a modem, but also a carryable ZIP drive which helps a lot.
