I once had a simular problem with an adaptec 1542. I managed to get it
working with the d option of grub:
install= (fd0)+1 d (hd0) (hd0,1)/boot/grub/stage2 0x8000 p
The documentation states that this will lead to another way oflooking up
drives, I don't remember exactly.
