I installed the Hurd using only dpkg files on a new system this weekend and got it booting single user before I ran out of time. I kept a log of everything I did (including mistakes) that may be found at http://www.corridor.com/~sfavor/hurd-faq/hurd-log.html. Thought it might be useful so I put it online...
