I experienced the same problem. In my case, it seems to be
due to a slowly failing disk drive. I would recommend booting
to a Linux rescue disk, running `fsck -c -f` on the root
partition (Hurd) and repair any problems.
This should allow you to boot.
How old is your disk drive?..... :-\
