Yeah, that's why you shouldn't use teh MAKEDEV from the Debian distribution
(read: makedev package) but the one from the Hurd package.

I'll file a bug report against the Hurd package to Conflict: makedev. This
should be a bit safer. The real solution is to get makedev package from the
archive, but it is unfortunately Architecture: all, and Debian
infrastructure is suboptimal currently.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Be careful with binary-all packages for now.

There is one in the hurd package. Reinstalling the hurd package helps :)

Either you don't have run the commands in native-install or you have not
make the partition with hurd ownership in the first place.

gnu-19990104 is a bit broken. You need to edit the native-install script and
run it to get proper device files and initial translators.

Better use cross-install.
