I have tried recompiling with the config file from the standard Debian kernel (2.6.8-2-smp). It took over 24 hours (!!) but I can confirm that the power switch works. So it doesn't look like a compiler problem. The options I chose initially obviously broke it. I'll investigate further. Ben
