SCSI problems

I am trying to install Debian Sarge on to a D-class dual 166 Mhz
pa-risc box without much success. The box came with 5 removable hard
drive bays (looks like something out of a Sparc-20) and 4 hard drives
in them (so 1 empty bay). I am not able to boot to the installer
unless I have removed some of the the drives (I assume that they are
bad):
ncr53c720-1:4 SIR 16, incorrect nexus identification on reselection
blah, blah,blah
ncr53c720-1:4 SCSI parity error detected: blah, blah, blah

Even then the installer hangs on setting up the partition (36% scanning disks).

I have tried both the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels and have met with defeat.
Any suggestions?
