I believe the 82596 is not capable of operating in duplex mode.
Grepping the driver for "duplex" shows nothing.  This shouldn't be
entirely surprising -- the 3com drivers only mention duplex for the 3c509,
3c515 and 3c59x, which leads me to believe that duplex was a pretty late
addition to most network device repertoires.
