Hi list,
I "reanimated" my old 712/80 and installed debian
on it, without running tasksel or dkpg. I used
debian-30r2-hppa-binary-1_NONUS.iso from ftp.de.debian.org
So far so good, it runs stable.
Then I ran tasksel again and marked
1.) X window system
2.) Desktop (incl. KDE & Gnome)
But the process stops and brings back that the x
window system can't be installed. After further investigation I found out that
twm is the package to be blamed. Twm itself is available for hppa, but it is
dependent on menu(>1.5) which is NOT available for hppa. So the systems
brings back: Sorry, broken packages :-(
So I decided to install only the secnd package.
The system installs gdm and kdm and asks a few questions but it seems that I
have problems with the config. At the moment my
system tells me that the Xserver (xstart) is not configured in the right way. I
tried to configure it with debconf but the server can't be started.
Asks about PCI and so on, but I don't have agp or
pci, well erm, what do I have here? I tried to find out more info on 712/80 but
I couldn't find any usefull info. Unfortunately I threw all my hw manuals into
the trash :-(
My question would be, which packages do I need to
succesfully install and run GNOME (and only Gnome) on my system?
In addition to that, where and how must the
xserver or gnome or whatever be configured to make it run properly?
I'd be very happy for more info about this, also
howtos, etc. Normally I simply don't use gfx because I mainly install servers,
but this time gfx is needed....
Thanks in advance for your help,
Jens
P.S.: when the system boots up I get a message
that my xserver is not properly installed and it points to this logfile which I
cp&pst here:
