problems with starting xfree86 with using fb

hello,
i have xfree86 and xdm installed on my hppa (debian/unstable). when i
try starting X with 'startx', i get the following error:

[...]
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
(EE) No OS PCI support available
(EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument
(EE) FBDEV(0): Mode init failed

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
[...]

the relating section from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"HPPA Video Card"
	Driver "fbdev"
	Option "UseFBDev"	"true"
EndSection

i use a selfcompiled 2.4.21 kernel, but based on the default 2.4.17
kernel config in sid and only removed some stuff like usb support and
added lvm support.
anyway, my framebuffer stuff works as i see the small tux image in the
left corner at boot time. fbset also gives an output. so what the hell
does xfree86 do with pci?

thanks for any help

bye
 mejo
