Thanks for your help everyone. I think i have found a solution:before getting into troubleshooting the install, on a lark, i decided to try the latest net install of woody (kernel 2.4.20) since it was a quick download/burn. the short of it is, it detected all my scsi drives just fine, and i got thru cfdisk alive.
one caveat:during the kernel config portion, it barfed on attempts to install any module drivers, saying it can't find them in /target/lib/modules/2.4.20-32, so i open a 2nd console and took a peek, and sure nuff, there is no 2.4.20-32 dir. there is a 2.4.17-xx dir though, to sufficiently confuse the mildly dense (me). i browsed my woody cd1, and found the modules.tgz that had 2.4.20-32 driver shite, and ftp'd it over from a RH linux box, untarred it, and was back on track.
