You don't exactly need to partition all these time your HDD, even if it is recommandable: I partitioned my HDD in order to provive the NECESSARY F= partition for PALO, swap and finally ext2 one. It has worked for the last month. However you are right when you state the last recommendation:
8-§ > Now you'll need to tell palo to find your kernel (in /etc/palo.conf):
8-§ > --commandline=2/vmlinux HOME=/ TERM=linux root=/dev/your_root_fs
