Is this parisc workstation running HPUX or parisc-linux?
You can do NFS root with HPUX NFS server but the /dev/ has to be hand made.
I've done this once ages ago...check Jan/Feb 2000 mail archives for
parisc-linux list on http://lists.parisc-linux.org/.

plug an external hardrive in?
That way you are portable between whatever parisc box is available.
