this might not help, but the kernel you are using is quite old, so I
would recommend first trying a newer kernel (either 'apt-get install
kernel-image-2.4.18-32' or download a tarball from
ftp://ftp.parisc-linux.org/kernels/32/32-2.4.18-pa24.tar.gz) and let us
know if the problem still exists.
