What is the pushing power behind the ability to emerge above all?
You perhaps wonder about the traits that set us apart from the Supermen and Superwomen of the Paralympics games. Triumph of the human spirit is the ability to emerge above our problems and not only survive, but thrive in the face of adversity.
The victory of the human spirit includes using our great inner strengths of the soul: faith, optimism, creativity, humour, patience and persistence. The body has an incredible aptitude to adapt with the power of mind. Christopher Reeve, an actor who played Superman in the movies and became a paraplegic after a horse-riding accident, said: ‘A hero is an ordinary person who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming difficulties.’
There has been another kind of triumph of the human spirit which people don’t talk about, but which enriches the human tapestry and shows ordinary people showing extraordinary strength and endurance to withstand torture and persecution by heartless dictators. There are so many heart wrenching stories of holocaust survivors.
Even today, in China there is a persistent persecution of Falun Gong practitioners who put up a peaceful resistance with their extraordinary faith. Even when they are targeted for their organs and are picked up for murder, they show an incredible quiet courage which the wrongdoers find unsettling.
Falun Gong, once a very admired meditation system in China, was admired by the government for its benefits to society. Sadly, the system was outlawed in its country of origin in 1999 after its acceptance was perceived as a threat by the Chinese Communist regime and has since been brutally tortured. The practice that is practiced by many in 114 countries, comprises of easy to learn, simple exercises for the body and is based on integration to the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. Diligent practice leads to a profound understanding of life and the universe, and a deepened spiritual awareness.
The torture of Falun Dafa in China is not only killing lives but suppressing the very principles which are fundamental to the health and well-being of all people throughout the world.
