Thanks John, for providing valuable insight to correlating this with 
upstream code.

Seems the helpful warning was added at git commit 680d7b5 and included 
since upstream release 2.8.

Lowered this bugreport to minor and changed its subject, by the 
assumption that it works also in older versions when explicitly told 
which format to process, and the issue therefore is one of suboptimal 
feedback (in older releases, which we are kinda stuck with on Debian, 
due to the pain of Haskell needing to be upgraded all at once and the 
lack of volunteers helping with maintenance of Haskell packages).
