First off, I'd want to make sure that backporting was really
necessary.  Was there a problem with using ghc6 from testing in stable
and with using apt pinning?

I was advised at #debian to not directly use the package build for sid as it may be binary incompatible with lenny. So I didn't bother trying to install it from sid. If it works with the sid repo, then it should be fine.

The usual reason for doing backports is to avoid pulling in half of
unstable to stable, typically in libraries.  Let's review ghc6's
dependencies:

Depends: perl | perl5, gcc (>= 4:4.2), libgmp3-dev, libffi-dev,
libbsd-dev, libc6-dev, libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6~), libffi5 (>= 3.0.4),
libgmp3c2, libncurses5 (>= 5.6+20071006-3)

All of those are already satisfiable in Lenny.  libbsd-dev's version
in stable is 0.0.1, which seems a bit worrisome, compared to 0.2.0
that is in testing.  But with only one other rdep, pulling the newer
version in shouldn't hurt.
