It sounds like you don't have upload privileges, presumably because you
aren't a DD (at least, I can't find you on people.debian.org).

I suggest that, like me, you could become a DM:

  Debian Maintainer is an official status of people, who are not (yet)
  Debian Developers, but that are allowed to upload packages, that have
  a DM field set. More details at http://wiki.debian.org/Maintainers.

This role has less responsibility than DDship, which lets you focus on
keeping your packages healthy.  So once you and your sponsor agree that
you have got your package under control, you can be left to look after
it yourself and your sponsor has more time to spend as mentor for other
packages.
