Thanks for the reply Paul. I'm pretty sure this is a busybox problem, since
the system boots w/o errors when using a Sharp-supplied busybox.
However, I did just compile the last stable 60.5 release and it's running w/o
errors, so I may stick with that and report the error to the busybox folks.
