This is designed to be fairly easy to build and is built down to a cost,
as it were.

It's designed for a couple of watts out - which is about comparable with
the ultimate receiver sensitivity.

In some sense, you don't want an alligator - all mouth and no ears - so
an amplifier needs to be scaled. There's also the question of a
relatively simple TX design - I'm not quite sure what the harmonic
suppression is, but you might need to check - harmonics etc. are
relative to power output. 40dB down on 5W is very different harmonic
suppression to 40dB down on 1kW.

If the receiver isn't the ultimate in sensitivity - any good, matched
antenna will help get more signal into the receive front end.

Hope this helps - it's a personal view and I'd be more than happy to
be proved wrong.
