Colin,

While I appreciate upstream's concern, having MySQL *installed on the same
machine* is not a requirement for it to run. This seems to me to be a case
for "Recommends" rather than "Depends"

>From the policy manual:

"Recommends

This declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency.

The Recommends field should list packages that would be found together
with this one in all but unusual installations."

The upstream includes this on the cqrlog website's download page:

"The binaries should work in any distribution. Please don't forget to install
MySQL server, MySQL client, Hamlib libraries and if LoTW support is desired,
trustedqsl package and libssl-devel must be installed."

If the upstream was truly concerned about the software "just working"
he would embed the database server in the cqrlog tarball (reference
MythTV's treatment of FFMPEG) and it would all just install at
once.

An example from a similar case in Ubuntu - MythTV. The MythTV
application is non-functional without a MySQL database server running
on the local network. None of the MythTV functional packages depend on the
MySQL server package, just mysql-client. (The meta-package MythTV does
depend on the MySQL server)

With the current Debian package, I can not install cqrlog on my shack machine
without either accepting a lot of wasted space/time (installing MySQL on the
box and then configuring it not to run or allowing it to run on the shack box
sucking up resources) or using force-depends vodoo to make cqrlog install this
one time without pulling in MySQL - and then having to remember to do this in
the future so and update/upgrade doesn't pull MySQL back in.
