Let me guess.

There were many changes between lenny and etch. Soundmodemconfig was
ported to GTK+ version 2 and libxml2. It could have something to do with
your configuration file: /etc/ax25/soundmodem.conf.

Please backup this file and re-run soundmodemconfig. Can you please tell
if this helps? If yes, is there a difference with the old file?
