If you install one of the Debian kernel-image packages, it will have the
AX.25 and other modules, so you really don't need to compile your own. 
I believe that the latest kernel in woody is probably 2.4.18, so you
should use: apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-386 (or whichever
processor-optimized version you wish).
