use of the network/interfaces file

This isn't really a debian question, I'm sorry!

How come I can put some "ifconfig" parameters in the "iface" stanzas but not 
others?

EG if configuring an ax25 interface I seem to have to put:-

iface dmascc0 inet static
        address 10.0.0.1
        netmask 255.0.0.0
        network 10.0.0.0
        broadcast 10.255.255.255
        up ifconfig dmascc0 hw ax25 xyz-1

That last line annoys me! Why can't I just put "hw ax25 callsign" in there?
