You should use the debian tools to make a new kernel
make menuconfig
make-kpkg clean
fakeroot make-kpkg --revision=ruppert.1.2 kernel-image
And after the compilation as root:
dpkg --install ../kernel-image-2.2.16_ruppert.1.2_i386.deb
This installes the modules als well as the kernel (incl.
the System.map-2.2.xx in /boot
You can name your kernel as you want, ruppert is the
name of the PC I'a, working at the moment.
