The question is not whether we _can_, we have to use higher level
bindings (glib, qt), but it's not possible because of dependencies:
$ apt-cache rdepends libpoppler0
libpoppler0
Reverse Depends:
evince (uses libpoppler0-glib)
epdfview (uses libpoppler0-glib)
* tetex-bin (uses libpoppler0 directly)
poppler-utils (built from poppler)
libpoppler1-qt (built from poppler)
libpoppler1-glib (built from poppler)
libpoppler-dev (built from poppler)
* kpdf (uses libpoppler0 directly)
kdegraphics-kfile-plugins (uses libpoppler0-qt)
* abiword-plugins (uses libpoppler0 directly)
And it's not possible to rewrite those within etch release timeframe.
