different updates on 2 like machines

Hi

i've been noticing some strange gnome behaviour on 2 different machines
with like package installations. when performing updates on one machine
and then the other from the same repositories (debian testing) the
results are often different.

the latest problem - which i think is a biggie - is gnome 2.12 to 2.14
updates (at least those packages that are currently available for 2.14).
a couple of features have me confused. the first has been noted by
myself (and others in response) previously on this list and the second
is a new one.

first, all /etc/fstab entries are displayed by nautilus. this is
apparently a known problem (?). the second i noticed more recently and
is the new bookmarks entry in the gnome menu Places. i wouldn't have
known about that one were it not for my second machine where the last
apt-get update revealed it.

what is strange i think is that the second machine not only has the new
bookmark menu in Places but also that it is not plagued by the problem
of displaying fstab entries as separate volumes in nautilus. basically
it seems fine.

i have diffed the package selections and versions on both machines and
can't seem to find any discrepancies within gnome related packages
(albeit to my knowledge). i reinstalled gnomevfs and associated bits on
the first machine to no avail.

basically i'm half waiting for the next update to produce some more
'interesting' results.

is anyone else experiencing this sort of behaviour? what packages should
i be looking for in determining where the problem lies?

i'm stumped!
suggestions appreciated.

Takis
