I have the same problem, and dmesg contains the following:

Xorg[17805]: segfault at 00000000002755dc rip 00002b0e14641927 rsp 00007fffffc948b0 error 4
NVRM: Xid: 12, COCOD 00000000 00000000 00000030 00000224 00010001

Do you have something similar in your dmesg output? Because of the NVRM,
I assumed Xorg was just segfaulting was due to the binary nvidia driver
I'm using.
