Okay, I think that's your problem. Make a symlink in the rules.d
directory to ../udev.rules and "invoke-rc.d udev restart." For some
reason, the correct rules file wasn't being linked to, which meant that
udev makes almost none of the device nodes it's supposed to. Also make a
link to the cd-symlinks rules file (I forget what it's called) if you want
to have "/dev/cdrom" and so on.
