I had the same problem yesterday, and it seems there are two solutions :
1) install gthumb, wait a bit, and then right click on the first image, and
do open with gthumb.
=> i hear that gthumb may be added to the gnome meta-package, and it may
make sense to default to it instead of eog.
2) select all the images you want to see, and do a right click on it. The
menu currently shows "open in <huge number> windows", but Seb said he may
look into this, so expect a future update of this, maybe. Don't know if then
gthumb will also be offered to automatically create a catalog with all the
selected fotos.
Problem that remains is when you have fotos in subdirectories, and you want to
see various of them in the same collection. This works with a nice * on the
command line, but i don't think nautilus is designed for this kind of things.
