Thanks for your help. This has fixed #233255 for me. I put the following line into /etc/apt/sources deb http://www.sury.org/debian/ ./ and then upgraded to your packaged version of 2.1.8 using apt-get install libfreetype6=2.1.8-0.sury.org.1 I can now view http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/german/l2tabu/l2tabu.pdf fine in gpdf.
