Another 2.6 upgrade

Hello all,

This is a detailed report of an upgrade from Sarge's Gnome 2.4 to
Experimental Gnome 2.6.

First things first, I added both "unstable" and "experimental" to my
sources.list file and went from there as I did previously with a
different system, only this time i tried to take notes on the things
that went wrong. This is what I got:

When libgconf2.4 was being installed, it just sits there waiting
forever... after I hit "ENTER" it continue with the installation of the
rest of the packages (This is the second time that happens to me while
installing gnome2.6 from experimental: apt-get install -t experimental
gnome-desktop-environment).

When logging in for the first time, Gnome would say that the session
lasted less than 10 seconds then it would offer to show the sessions
error file, inside that file there was nothing. Just common entries. I
fixed this issue by logging on from a console (ctrl+alt+f1) and moving
the old .xsession file to xsession. After that I could login with no
problems.

Gnome complaint about my .Xmodmap file. I had to remove that file
afterwards (supposedly the keyboard control panel allows you to
configure your keycodes, but, I have not done that yet).

When using Nautilus 2.6 to mount smb shares over the network, the system
log displayed the following errors, and, of course, nautilus hung
forever:

In case you wonder, the kernel is "tainted" because it has the nvidia
module loaded. I never saw this kind of errors before with Nautilus 2.4.
Also, in fstab the share I have set (which was working find before) has
been setup like that for a long time and it doesn't contain the "noexec"
option as said above. I think nautilus uses it's own options when
mounting shares and it disregards the entries in fstab? Not sure.

I fixed the previous issue by stopping FAM and rebooting the box. After
that, I could mount the smbfs shares with no problems. Just they didn't
change icons to gnome-fs-smb.png like Nautilus 2.4 did. The Gnome icons
folder still has the icon, so I guess that there is something screwed
there possibly upstream and not necessarily the Debian package?

I had to manually install all the gtk2-engines* that i needed: pixbuf,
pixmaps, smooth, crux, etc... Something is screwed there.

The gnome-devel meta package doesn't work. I had to manually pick all
gnome-dev stuff starting from libgnomeui2-dev and following with
whatever was left.

This should be it for now, I'll try to install Gnome2.6 to other boxes I
have to see how smooth/bad the process goes.

All in all, i'm very glad I did the upgrade.

Keep up the good work.

p.d. For those keeping notes, I upgraded the GnoMetal2 theme (again).
This time I added a better "visiting" folder icon (hopefully better) and
cleaned up a lot of stuff that were wrong or extra (thus wrong anyway).
You can get it from
http://www.latinomixed.com/downloads/GnoMetal2.tar.bz2 as usual... To
